Antibiotics Before Infection
I don't know whether to laugh or cry at this next story but here goes. The New England Journal of Medicine says that a new Dutch study shows giving patients in intensive care antibiotic before they catch an infection, saves lives.
The World Health Organization reminds us that hospitals are dirty places, full of germs. So even at the risk of making the antibiotic resistance of some a real issue, they think that precautionary antibiotic treatments for the sick may make sense. When very ill and in the hospital is one thing.
I am wondering when the drug makers will suggest that for everyone. After all, there are many vaccines out there that the drug pushers are trying to get everyone to use - just in case. So why not use the same tactic for antibiotics? Afterall, we have all kinds of antibiotic products we're using now...
